Love and Mercy:

The Conservatorship of Legendary Beach Boy
Brian Wilson

Beach Boy Brian Wilson is considered by many to be one of America’s
true musical geniuses. Learn through interviews/archival video how Brian

 -- Was affected by a mental illness and a drug addiction which threatened
to ruin his career;

--  Was saved by a Ph.D. psychologist who nearly destroyed him;

--  Was saved by the guardianship/conservatorship process

This program will examine Brian Wilson’s genius and severe mental illness, and how
the guardianship/conservatorship process returned Wilson to a healthy and productive
lifestyle and musical career.

Attendees of this session will learn the following objectives:

1) The variable nature of schizoaffective disorder and the negative consequences of improper
treatment, even by skilled professionals.

2) The consequences of violation of ethical boundaries by friends, family, and treatment professionals in a fiduciary relationship of trust with a vulnerable person with mental illness.

3) The positive impact that legal intervention through a conservatorship proceeding can have by legally separating perpetrators of abuse and exploitation from a vulnerable person with mental illness, and the ethical obligation to limit and eventually terminate the judicial intervention when the conservatorship is no longer required.

4) The devastating impact of untreated mental illness on persons of immense talent and ability, and the enrichment to persons with mental illness and society as a whole when a constructive approach is taken to properly treating mental illness.

5) How Brian Wilson is one of the greatest American composers.
